How do I turn my stifling crew neck into a V neck? Check out my YouTube tutorial below, or continue reading.
- The first step is seam ripping the collar. I recommend seam ripping from right before where the shoulder seam meets the collar.
2. Next, measure how far down you want your V-neck to be. If it is over 2 inches, you will need to get more neck ribbon (which is why, for this tutorial, I recommend a max of 2 inches deep).
3. Fold your shirt in half, matching up the shoulder seams. In the center of the shirt, mark how far down you want your V to be. Then, trace a line from the top of the shirt to the V neck marking. After the line is drawn, cut on the line.
4. Afterwards, find the middle of the neck ribbon and cut it apart.
5. Pull on each side of the neck ribbon to stretch it out. Then, pin the right side of the neck ribbon to the right side of the new V neck you have cut. Leave 1″ of neck tape away from 1″ of the V. Sew each side until this 1″ mark.
6. To sew a T-shirt, be sure to use a stitch type that is designed for stretchy fabric. I prefer #7 on the second row, the zig zag stitch with a straight stitch on either side, because it creates a straight line and a clean finish. I also use a stretch needle, a walking foot (optional, but helps to not stretch out the fabric when sewing), and a 2 mm stitch width so minimal collar ribbon is taken up by the seam.
7. Having sewn both sides, take the short end of one ribbon and pin it to the opposite V side. Sew. Then, stretch the rest of the tape to fit, and sew. Do this for both sides. If this is confusing, click here to see my YouTube tutorial to watch with more direction.
