Meet the Designer

Hi, I’m Joan, of Joanie Rose Sewing.

Since I was 10, I, like many sewists, struggled to learn the proper techniques to create garments. Learning basic construction was difficult enough, but adding problems of fit, cost, and lengthy time per garment made progressing demotivating. This was my relationship with sewing until I discovered doll sewing.

My childhood American Girl Dolls were the perfect models to learn on. With doll clothes, I, a beginner myself at the time, could make a dress in a day instead of weeks, and they fit perfectly!

Once I learned the foundations of sewing on dolls, I had the skills to tackle human sized clothing next. Dealing with sizing was definitely a challenge, but nothing is more motivating than the squeals of little girls opening their matching doll dresses on Christmas.

Now I want to give other aspirational sewists this joy! My tutorials and patterns are created with the intention of learning new skills at an appropriate rate. They are also heavily tested and revised with beginner and advanced sewist feedback. If you want to become more engaged in this sewing community, check out my socials, or feel free to email me at joanierosesewing@gmail.com.

Happy Sewing!

Light up ballet tutu with embroidered butterflies I sewed.

A tutu I made for an at-risk youth in Higher Ground’s Youth & Family Services. I hand sewed each butterfly on the skirt, as well as soldered the wires and hand sewed the lights behind each butterfly.
